We will have our annual neighborhood Ice Cream Social on Thursday, September 22 at 6:00 pm at the ONK park. The park is located at 412 E. Oklahoma Ave. ONK will provide the ice cream, and you can bring a topping to share. Please come out and join us for a fun evening with neighbors! The Knoxville Fire Department will have a fire truck on hand for the kids to explore, which is a real treat.

ONK Park Cleanup 9/18/2016

We’ll have a neighborhood park cleanup day on Sunday, September 18 from 2 pm to 4:30 pm. The annual ONK Ice Cream Social is rapidly approaching and we need to give the park a little bit of loving care before the big event. Come down to the park at 412 E. Oklahoma Ave. and help us pull weeds and get things tidied up and in order. Please bring along a pair of gardening gloves if you have them. You might also want to bring along wheelbarrows, pitch forks, shovels, pruners, kneeling pads, or anything else you think we might find helpful.

September Neighborhood Potluck – Change Of Plans!

Instead of our normal monthly potluck for September, we will instead have a joint meeting with Fourth & Gill. Same date as usual (Monday, September 12), same time as usual (food starts at 6:30 pm , meeting starts at 7:00 pm), but a different location: Central United Methodist Church, at 201 Third Ave (in Fourth & Gill). There will be a special speaker from Helen Ross McNabb to discuss their client services.

First Creek Greenway Cleanup 9/10/2016

Our next First Creek Greenway cleanup will be Saturday, September 10 from 9 am to noon. We’ll meet at the parking lot at the end of Cottage Place, which is right next to the First Creek Greenway. Cottage Place is off 6th Ave between Glenwood Ave and Grainger Ave. ONK will provide gloves and garbage bags, as well as water and snacks. Even if you can’t come for all three hours we have scheduled, please come by for as long as you can and help out.

This is a really terrific event to do with your kids. They get some time outdoors where they can run around a bit and expend some excess energy while doing something good for the neighborhood and community. Older participants and adults can borrow a pair of waders and venture directly in the creek to get trash that can’t be reached from the shore.

If you are trying to decide whether or not you should come (short answer: you should), then think of this as more of a “treasure hunt” and less of a cleanup. Will you find a couch? A television? A shopping cart? A few old tires? Maybe a mattress? All of these things and more have been discovered during previous greenway cleanups. Come on out and see if you can top our past finds with something truly unique and unexpected.

We schedule greenway cleanup days twice each year, once in the spring and once in the fall, and we alternate which portions of the greenway we focus our efforts on, so there’s always plenty of work to be done.

July Neighborhood Potluck – Change Of Plans!

Instead of our normal monthly potluck for July, we will instead participate in the city’s new Neighborhoods to Nature event.

On Monday, July 11, instead of meeting at 6:30 pm at St. James as we normally do, we will meet at 6:00 pm at Fourth United Presbyterian, which is at the corner of Glenwood and Broadway. We will be joined by Vice Mayor Duane Grieve, who will lead us in a walk to the Ashley Nicole playground at Caswell Park. Our friends from Parkridge and Fourth and Gill will also start walks at the same time from their respective neighborhoods, and we’ll all meet up together at the playground around 6:30 pm. There will be food trucks there at the meetup spot if you would like to purchase food.

Please see the announcement below, as well as the attached PDF:

The City of Knoxville this summer and fall is hosting a series of events called “Neighborhoods to Nature” — with the twin goals of promoting physical activity and showing how quickly and conveniently many city residents can walk to a park or greenway.

The first such walk will be held Monday evening, July 11, with residents from at least three neighborhoods starting on their walks at 6 p.m. and meeting at Ashley Nichole Dream Playground near Caswell Park by 6:30 p.m.

Each group of neighbors will be accompanied by a police officer and by an elected official or top city staff member.
*** Mayor Madeline Rogero will be on the Parkridge walk, starting at the Parkridge Community Garden at Olive Street and Fifth Avenue.
*** Vice Mayor Duane Grieve will lead the walk from Old North; the meet-up point is Fourth United Presbyterian Church on Broadway.
*** Chief Operating Officer and Deputy to the Mayor Christi Branscom will lead the walk from Fourth and Gill, starting at the Fourth and Gill Park on Eleanor Street.

If you live in these neighborhoods, you are encouraged to bring your families and join everyone for the kick-off event. Other neighborhoods within one mile of the park can be added. If you don’t live in one of the three named neighborhoods, but you are still interested in participating, contact Debbie Sharp at 215-4382.

Final routes and neighborhoods will be posted at http://www.knoxvilletn.gov/N2N by the end of this week. For walkers tuned into social media, use the hashtag #N2N to post pictures of your group and scenery along the way.

The City will be doing more Neighborhoods to Nature walks in other parts of the city in coming months. Keep your eyes open for the next one.
